Precautions and Warnings With Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium ES
Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES can cause dangerous allergic reactions. Other safety warnings and precautions with amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES apply to people who have penicillin allergies or phenylketonuria. Also, some people may not be able to take this antibiotic safely if certain health conditions are present, such as kidney or liver disease.
What Should I Tell My Child's Healthcare Provider?You should talk to your child's healthcare provider before starting amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES (Augmentin ES®) if your child has:
- Liver disease, including liver failure, cirrhosis, or hepatitis
- Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
- A penicillin allergy
- Any other allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medications your child is taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Specific Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium ES Warnings and PrecautionsSome warnings and precautions to be aware of with this product include the following:
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES contains amoxicillin, an antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin group of antibiotics. You should not take this medicine if you are allergic to penicillin. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, itching, hives, wheezing, swelling of the mouth or lips, or difficulty breathing. An allergic reaction to this antibiotic can be very dangerous.
- Let your healthcare provider know if your child experiences diarrhea that is severe or that lasts for more than two or three days. While diarrhea is a common side effect of amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES, severe or prolonged diarrhea may be a sign of a serious reaction to the antibiotic.
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES contains 7 mg of phenylalanine in each teaspoonful (each 5 mL). This is important for people with phenylketonuria, who must limit their intake of phenylalanine.
- Your healthcare provider may need to monitor your child more closely if he or she has liver or kidney disease, as these problems often affect the way your body handles medications. Also, amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES can make liver or kidney disease worse.
- Sometimes, antibiotics (including amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES) can cause yeast infections. Let your healthcare provider know if your child develops a vaginal yeast infection or thrush (a yeast infection of the mouth) while taking this medication.
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES should not be used to treat viruses, such as the common cold. This medicine is completely ineffective for treating viruses, and such use can lead to bacterial resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES.
- It is very important to take amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES exactly as prescribed. Skipping doses or stopping this antibiotic too early (even if you feel better) can lead to bacterial resistance to this antibiotic.
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES can interact with other medications (see Drug Interactions With Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium ES).
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES is considered a pregnancy Category B medication. This means that it is probably safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are not known. It's important to note, however, that this product is only approved for use in children, and it is generally not prescribed for pregnant women. Talk to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this drug during pregnancy (see Augmentin ES and Pregnancy for more information).
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, make sure to talk with your healthcare provider prior to beginning treatment with this antibiotic (see Augmentin ES and Breastfeeding for more information). Again, it's important to keep in mind that this drug is not approved for use in adults.
