Baby Formula 101

If you have begun weaning or simply want to have backup bottles for daycare, you may have some questions about baby formula. While perusing the baby formula aisle in the supermarket, you may have wondered why some formulas are so much more expensive than others.

Is pre-mixed better than powder? Is organic better than regular? Are the name brands better than the generics? Essentially the bottom line is this -- no, there is very little difference between all of them.

Baby formula is highly regulated by the FDA, which ensures that they all contain specific amounts of the same 29 essential nutrients. If you have found a formula that your baby enjoys, run with it. Provided that it does not cause any digestive problems, you can feel confident that your little one is getting just the right amount of nutrition, regardless of packaging and marketing.

A few things that you may want to keep in mind when researching formulas:

  • Pre-mixed formula is simply easier to prepare, but no different otherwise

  • Choosing to buy organic is a lifestyle choice and does not contain any more nutrition than the non-organic options

  • The name brands may have more supplements added, like DHA and ARA, but otherwise have the same amount of everything else as the generic brands.

Avoiding the Sniffles

It happens to everyone. Catching the common cold is an easy thing to do, even for a tiny person with very little hand-eye coordination! Now that leaving the house is as easy as pie and happens practically daily, meeting up with a few germs is almost inevitable.

Here are a few tips on how you can help keep the common cold away from your little one:

  • Wash those hands -- yours and your baby's
  • Keep the baby's toys clean -- especially the pacifier
  • Steer clear of play dates when you know someone there is sick
  • Make sure you and your little one are well rested and eat a well-balanced diet.

Do your part, moms and dads -- if your baby gets sick, keep her away from the daycare center. It takes just one baby to make a room full of babies start sniffling!
