You and Your Four-Week-Old Baby

Baby's Week 4: Helpful Tips for Parents

Our tip of the week -- put your baby down to sleep when he or she is showing signs of getting sleepy (and is still awake and not crying). Some of these signs might be:

  • Rubbing their eyes
  • Pulling their ears
  • Their ears are getting bright red (for some babies)
  • Other signs unique to your baby (which you will learn as time goes on).

Learning these pre-sleep cues and putting your baby down when you see them will help him or her learn to fall asleep on their own. This can be helpful for a couple of reasons. First, it will help your baby learn to go back to sleep without assistance should they wake up during the night. It also will help your sanity later on down the line. Rocking your baby to sleep or feeding them until they have fallen asleep can be a difficult habit to break (like when they are three and want you to lie down with them to fall asleep!).
