Clonidine ER

Available by prescription only, clonidine ER is approved for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This medication can be used alone or in combination with stimulants to help treat ADHD symptoms in children and adolescents. The drug comes in the form of an extended-release tablet and is taken once or twice daily. Possible side effects include irritability, drowsiness, and fatigue.

What Is Clonidine ER?

Clonidine ER (Kapvay™) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents. Unlike many other ADHD treatments, this medication is not a stimulant and is not a controlled substance. Clonidine ER is the first ADHD medication approved for use in combination with stimulants, although it can be used alone as well.
This article refers only to Kapvay, the clonidine ER version approved to treat ADHD. There is another clonidine ER medication (Nexiclon™ XR) approved for treating high blood pressure.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, clonidine ER can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the drug will experience problems. Most people tolerate it quite well.
Common side effects of clonidine ER include but are not limited to:
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Upper respiratory tract infections (such as the common cold).
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
