Drug Interactions With Clonidine ER
When beta blockers, certain calcium channel blockers, and medications that cause drowsiness are taken with clonidine ER, drug interactions may occur. These reactions may lead to potentially serious problems, such as a dangerously slow heart rate or low blood pressure. To help reduce your risk for complications, tell your healthcare provider if you are taking any other medications before starting treatment.
Clonidine ER (Kapvay™) could potentially react with a number of other medications. Some of the drugs that may interact with clonidine ER include but are not limited to:
- Beta blockers, such as:
- Atenolol (Tenormin®)
- Bisoprolol (Zebeta®)
- Carvedilol (Coreg®)
- Labetalol (Trandate®)
- Metoprolol (Lopressor®, Toprol XL®)
- Nadolol (Corgard®)
- Nebivolol (Bystolic®)
- Pindolol (Visken®)
- Propranolol (Inderal®, Inderal LA, InnoPran XL®)
- Sotalol (Betapace®)
- Timolol (Blocadren)
- Certain calcium channel blockers, such as:
- Diltiazem (Cardizem®, Cardizem CD®, Cardizem LA®, Cartia XT®, Dilacor XR®, Dilt-CD®, Diltia XT®, Dilt-XR®, Taztia XT®, Tiazac®)
- Verapamil (Calan®, Calan SR®, Covera-HS®, Isoptin SR®, Verelan®, Verelan PM®)
- Digoxin (Digitek®, Lanoxin®)
- Other medications or substances that cause drowsiness, such as:
- Alcohol
- Antipsychotic medications
- Anxiety medications
- Most antidepressants
- Muscle relaxants
- Narcotic pain relievers
- Sleep medications
- Some antihistamines.
This article refers only to Kapvay, the clonidine ER version approved to treat ADHD. There is another clonidine ER medication (Nexiclon™ XR) approved for treating high blood pressure.
