A number of creams and ointments are available for the treatment of
diaper rash. For example,
Desitin® is an over-the-counter (OTC) ointment that can be used to protect the skin from irritants, seal out wetness, and soothe irritation.
There are three different Desitin products currently available on the market, including:
- Desitin Original™ ointment -- 40 percent zinc oxide
- Desitin Creamy® ointment -- 13 percent zinc oxide
- Desitin Clear™ ointment -- vitamins A and D in white petrolatum.
Diaper rashes are very common, with most babies having diaper rash at least occasionally. Even if you are very careful to change your baby's diapers frequently, moisture will still be in contact with your baby's skin for some period of time. This moistness, combined with irritation from urine or stool, irritating lotions or soaps, and chafing from clothing or diapers can quickly lead to a diaper rash.
Usually, it is recommended to treat diaper rash by trying to keep your baby's skin clean and dry, with frequent diaper changes. Additionally, barrier products (like Desitin) are also very useful for both preventing and treating diaper rash.
