Desitin is very unlikely to cause serious side effects. Serious problems might be more likely to occur if Desitin is accidentally taken by mouth (as might occur with a young child or a pet). Taking any kind of ointment by mouth may cause pneumonia if the ointment is inhaled into the lungs.
Additionally, consuming a large amount of Desitin Creamy or Original ointment could cause zinc toxicity. Symptoms of zinc toxicity include:
- A copper deficiency
- Watery diarrhea
- Coughing
- Kidney problems
- Lethargy
- Fatigue
- Chills and a fever
- Yellow skin (jaundice) or yellow eyes
- Mouth and throat irritation.
Finally, some people are very aware and concerned about the various ingredients commonly used in skin products. For instance, some people like to stay away from petrolatum products for various reasons. Be aware that Desitin contains petrolatum (as well as a variety of other inactive ingredients, depending on the particular product).
