Fifth Disease Prevention: A Summary

There is no vaccine or medicine that prevents fifth disease. Frequent hand-washing is recommended as a practical and typically effective method of fifth disease prevention. Excluding people with fifth disease from work, childcare centers, or schools is not likely to prevent the spread of the virus (parvovirus B19), since people are contagious before they develop the rash (see Is Fifth Disease Contagious?).
