Fluticasone Propionate Lotion Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Fluticasone propionate lotion has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received the drug, while another group was given a placebo (a lotion that did not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In clinical trials, the most common fluticasone propionate lotion side effects included:

  • Dry skin on multiple areas of the body -- in up to 7 percent of people
  • Stinging at the application site -- up to 5 percent
  • Common cold symptoms -- up to 4 percent
  • Influenza (the flu) -- up to 2 percent
  • Damaged skin (caused by scratching or rubbing) -- up to 2 percent.

In general, side effects are more likely to occur if a dressing, such as a bandage, is used to cover the medication. Do not use a dressing or a bandage unless your healthcare provider specifically recommends this.

Long-Term Side Effects of Fluticasone Propionate Lotion

Using steroids like fluticasone propionate lotion over long periods can cause a different set of side effects. These reactions are most likely to be seen in people who use this medicine over a large area of the body for a long time. Some of the problems seen with long-term use might include:

  • Weight gain
  • Bulging eyes
  • Fluid retention
  • Osteoporosis
  • Loss of muscle
  • Fat deposits on the face and back, causing a round face and a fatty hump on the back of the neck
  • Diabetes
  • Cataracts
  • Stunted growth (in children).

Keep in mind that these effects are more common with systemic steroids, which are taken by mouth or injection, and are probably rare with fluticasone propionate lotion when used as directed and for a short time. Fluticasone propionate lotion should not be used for longer than four weeks at a time.
