An Overview of Gatifloxacin Interactions
Gatifloxacin (
Zymar®,
Zymaxid™) is a prescription antibiotic available as an eye drop. It belongs to a class of medications called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short. Gatifloxacin is unlikely to interact with other drugs.
More Information About Drug Interactions With Gatifloxacin
Gatifloxacin products are used in the eye, and very little of the medication is absorbed into the blood after normal use. Thus, because only very small amounts of the drug (if any) are found in the blood, gatifloxacin is not likely to interact with other medications.
In general,
gatifloxacin eye drops should not be used at the same time as other eye drops. If you use more than one eye drop medication, separate the doses by at least five minutes. Ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider if you have questions about the best way to space your eye drop medications.
At this time, it seems unlikely that gatifloxacin would interact with other drugs. No interactions have been identified to date, and very little of the medication is expected to be absorbed into the blood after normal use. However, this does not necessarily mean that there really are no gatifloxacin drug interactions. This medication has not been studied with every possible drug, and interactions may be discovered at a later date.
It is always a good idea to make sure all your healthcare providers have a complete list of your medications. Therefore, tell your healthcare providers about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription products, vitamins, or herbal supplements, even if you believe they will not react with other medicines.
