Gatifloxacin Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Gatifloxacin has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people using the drug were documented and then compared to those that occurred in a similar group of people using a placebo eye drop (an eye drop with no active ingredients).
In these studies, the most commonly reported side effects of gatifloxacin, occurring in at least 1 percent of people, included:
  • Eye irritation
  • Eye pain
  • Increased tearing
  • An unpleasant taste
  • Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea, which is the clear tissue that covers the front of the eye)
  • Papillary conjunctivitis, or inflammation and tiny bumps on the lining of the eyelids
  • Worsening of conjunctivitis
  • Swelling of the eyelids and eye area
  • Broken blood vessels in the eyes
  • Dry eye
  • Eye redness
  • Eye discharge
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision.

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the gatifloxacin side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.
Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects during treatment or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to gatifloxacin, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
