Gatifloxacin Side Effects

Although most people have no problems when using gatifloxacin, adverse reactions are possible. For example, common side effects of gatifloxacin include eye pain, eye irritation, and increased tearing. These problems are usually mild and easily treated; however, if they persist or seem to get worse, stop using this medication and contact your healthcare provider.

An Introduction to Gatifloxacin Side Effects

Just like any medicine, gatifloxacin (Zymar®, Zymaxid™) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in many cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects of Gatifloxacin

Some gatifloxacin side effects, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Severe or persistent eye redness, irritation, or pain that does not go away or that gets worse with repeated gatifloxacin use
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
     
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
