Imipramine Hydrochloride Dosing

When given to children for bedwetting, imipramine hydrochloride dosing guidelines recommend 25 mg a day, taken before bedtime. For depression treatment in adults, the recommended starting dose is 75 mg a day. Your healthcare provider may increase the dosage if the medication is not effective in helping to treat these conditions. Imipramine Hydrochloride Dosing: An Overview

The dose of imipramine hydrochloride (Tofranil^®) that your healthcare provider prescribes will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

Your age
The condition being treated
Other medical conditions you may have
Other medications you may currently be taking.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Imipramine Hydrochloride Dosing for Depression

The recommended starting dose of imipramine hydrochloride when treating depression is imipramine 75 mg per day (taken either all at once at bedtime or divided into smaller doses throughout the day). If needed, your healthcare provider may increase your dose up to 300 mg total per day.

Although imipramine is not approved for use in teens, the manufacturer gives recommendations for imipramine dosing in this age group. When treating depression in teens or the elderly, lower doses are recommended. The recommended starting dose in this case is imipramine 30 mg to 40 mg total per day (taken all at once or split into smaller doses).

If you do not take your imipramine as scheduled, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if you usually take your dose at night, you may not want to make up the missed dose during the day, due to the risk of drowsiness. Also, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.
