Imipramine Hydrochloride

Imipramine hydrochloride is approved to treat depression in adults and bedwetting in children. By affecting certain chemicals in the brain, it helps improve symptoms of depression. The medication also relaxes bladder muscles, which can help children who have problems with bedwetting. Imipramine hydrochloride comes in tablet form and is usually taken one to four times a day. Possible side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, and confusion.

Imipramine hydrochloride (Tofranil®) is a prescription medication that is a tricyclic antidepressant. It is used to treat a number of conditions.
 

Who Makes Imipramine Hydrochloride?

Imipramine is made by Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. Generic imipramine is made by several manufacturers of generic medications.
 

Uses for Imipramine Hydrochloride

Imipramine is approved to treat the following conditions:
 
  • Depression (also known as major depression or clinical depression) in adults
  • Bedwetting in children.
     
Imipramine hydrochloride is different from imipramine pamoate, a similar medication that is only approved for the treatment of depression (see Imipramine for information about the differences between the two).
