Body awareness is the ability to find one's body parts without looking. Babies this young have no understanding that they are an individual with their own body. For example, they do not know that their hands are their own.
This concept is eventually realized by experiencing sensations, movements, and ultimately the passing of time with consistent exposure to sensory stimulation.
Try these learning games for body awareness:
- Limb Labeling: With your baby on a soft and safe surface, gently massage the different parts of his body while naming the body parts as you go. Start with his right arm and hand and then the left. Then do the same with his right foot and then the left. Tap his tummy and tickle his cheek. While he really won't understand what you are saying, the gentle stimulation will help him with body awareness and to develop his tactile senses. Plus, he will love the closeness and the nurturing interaction with you.
- Reach for It: Hold a brightly colored and visually interesting toy just out of reach. Watch your baby reach for it and swat at it. If she's lucky, she can make contact and even grasp it. This encourages eye movements, as well as upper body strength.
In general, to help your baby develop body awareness, take every opportunity to hold, carry, rock,
stroke, and cuddle your baby. Feeling that warmth and togetherness won't ever get old!
