Infant Tylenol Dosage (Cont.)

Infant Tylenol Doses for Older Children

For children ages two to three (weighing 24 to 35 pounds), the recommended infant Tylenol dose is 1.6 mL every four hours as needed (but not more than five times in a day). The dropper that comes with infant Tylenol drops measures 0.4 mL or 0.8 mL (but not 1.6 mL). In order to measure 1.6 mL, you will need to give two 0.8-mL doses. If your child weighs less than 24 pounds or more than 35 pounds, ask your child's healthcare provider about the proper dose. Children age two and older may take Children's Tylenol instead of infant Tylenol drops.

General Information on Dosing for Infant Tylenol

Considerations for those giving infant Tylenol include the following:

  • Infant Tylenol drops are taken by mouth. Dispense the medication slowly into your child's mouth toward the inner cheek. Do not try to squirt it down the throat.

  • Infant Tylenol drops are different from Children's Tylenol. Make sure to carefully check which product you are using.

  • Infant Tylenol drops are more concentrated than Children's Tylenol because it can be difficult for babies to take a large volume of a medication.

  • This medication can be taken without regard to food or breastfeeding. However, you may want to avoid giving a dose of infant Tylenol just after a feeding, as your baby may be more likely to spit it up.

  • Be sure to shake the bottle well before every single dose of infant Tylenol drops.

  • Make sure you know exactly how much medication to give your child and exactly how to measure the dose. If you are not sure, ask your child's healthcare provider.

  • It is important to keep track of how much infant Tylenol you give your child, as it is easy to give too much (see Tylenol Poisoning). Keep in mind that acetaminophen (the active ingredient in infant Tylenol drops) is found in many medications, both prescription and non-prescription.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your infant's Tylenol dosage, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
