Infant Tylenol Dosage

For children weighing 24 to 35 pounds, the recommended dosage of infant Tylenol is 1.6 mL every four hours as needed. To help ensure that your child does not spit up the drug, avoid giving your child his or her dose just after a feeding. If you are giving the medicine to a child under age two, be sure to discuss the dosage guidelines with a healthcare provider.

An Introduction to Infant Tylenol Dosages

The recommended dose of Infants' Tylenol® (infant acetaminophen) will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your child's age and weight
  • Other medications your child may be taking
  • Other medical conditions your child may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your child's dosage of infant Tylenol unless his or her healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Infant Tylenol Concentration Change

To help minimize the risk of overdoses due to mix-ups between infant acetaminophen and children's acetaminophen products, the strength of all infant acetaminophen products (including Infant Tylenol) will now be the same as the children's acetaminophen products (160 mg per 5 mL). This is a change from the previous concentration of Infant Tylenol (which was 80 mg per 0.8 mL). The new products will be less concentrated, meaning you will have to give more (in terms of volume) to achieve the same dosage.

For a while, both concentrations may be available in the marketplace, probably well into 2012. This means that caregivers need to be extremely vigilant to note the concentration (and dosage) of the particular product they have. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider, as quite a bit of confusion and many questions are anticipated during this change.
