Desitin
® is an over-the-counter (OTC) product that can be used to both treat and prevent
diaper rash. It is available in three different forms, including:
- Desitin Original™ ointment -- 40 percent zinc oxide
- Desitin Creamy® ointment -- 13 percent zinc oxide
- Desitin Clear™ ointment -- vitamins A and D in white petrolatum.
For two of these products (Original and Creamy), the active ingredient is zinc oxide, a chemical compound. When applied to the skin, it helps to protect the skin from irritants and may also serve as a mild astringent (helping to dry oozing of minor irritation) and a weak antiseptic. Desitin Clear contains
vitamin A and D in white petrolatum and works by forming a protective barrier.
Desitin ointments are applied liberally as often as necessary, both to treat and to prevent diaper rash. If a diaper rash does not improve within seven days of using Desitin, talk to your child's healthcare provider about other possible options.
