Breastfeeding Vs. Formula Feeding

The Drawbacks to Breastfeeding

There is no question about the health benefits of breastfeeding. However, there is also the practical side of your feeding choice. This is where breastfeeding can have some drawbacks. Some of these possible disadvantages include:

  • If you haven't pumped a bottle in advance, the mother can't go far. And there is no passing off the nighttime feeding to your spouse.
  • It can be difficult to tell how much milk the baby is getting, which can be frustrating for a new parent.
  • Babies digest breast milk efficiently. This can mean more frequent feedings compared to formula.
  • It can be a longer learning process -- not always, but just enough to make it seem a bit daunting.
  • There is always the possibility of pain from a clogged duct or mastitis or sore nipples.

The Benefits of Feeding Your Newborn Formula

Formula is a nutritious alternative to breast milk. Should you decide to feed your newborn baby formula, here are a few of the advantages that you can expect:

  • Formula feeding gives the mother greater flexibility with her schedule. The father and other caretakers can easily step in, give a bottle, and establish their own bonding routines.

  • It is easy to tell how much the baby is getting, which can be reassuring.

  • Babies digest formula slower than breast milk. As a result, formula-fed babies typically go longer between feedings -- during the day and especially the night!

  • There is no learning curve; preparing a bottle is quick and easy.

  • The mother can eat and drink whatever she wants (responsibly, of course). If you want an extra serving of that spicy, gas-causing casserole, you don't need to think twice about it.
