How to Prepare Infant Formula

How Much Baby Formula Should I Make?

Newborn babies need about 2 to 3 ounces of baby formula every three to four hours. This amount will gradually increase but will be about the same for about the first full month. During the first few months, you will need small, 4- or 5-ounce bottles to feed your baby with.

After the first week, the amount your baby needs per feeding will depend on a few of the following factors:

  • Your baby's height/weight
  • The time of day
  • The amount of time since his or her last feeding
  • The volume of the last feeding
  • Whether he or she is going through a growth spurt.

Watch your baby's hunger cues closely to learn his or her individual needs and to feed them accordingly. These guidelines may take some of the guesswork and stress out of the feeding portion of things. Eventually, you will need the tall 8-ounce bottles.
