Pentacel Side Effects

Serious Side Effects

There are a number of rare but serious side effects with Pentacel or other childhood vaccines that you should report to your child's healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:
  • A high fever
  • Any unusual behavior changes (aside from the usual fussiness that typically occurs after vaccinations)
  • A seizure
  • Persistent, inconsolable crying lasting for three hours or more
  • Weakness, tingling, or paralysis (which may be signs of Guillain-Barré syndrome)
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:

    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.

Final Thoughts

It is possible that your child may experience some or none of the side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your child's healthcare provider to know beforehand if your child will have side effects from the vaccine.
Therefore, make sure to seek medical attention if your child develops any side effects after getting Pentacel. Also, let your child's healthcare provider know if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be a Pentacel side effect, your child's healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem (or to provide reassurance if nothing is wrong).
