Pink Eye in Adults

Treating Pink Eye in Adults

Treatment for pink eye depends on its cause. Antibiotic drops or ointments are used in people with bacterial conjunctivitis. Medicines will also be recommended to treat conjunctivitis caused by allergies (see Medicine for Pink Eye).
No medicines can cure pink eye caused by a virus. However, there are medicines that will treat the symptoms (such as itching or irritation).
For all types of conjunctivitis, there are also things you can do at home to help with symptoms, such as warm or cool compresses and cleaning the eye regularly (see Home Treatment for Pink Eye).

When to Call Your Doctor

Pink eye from conjunctivitis is common. However, there are a number of other causes of a pink or red eye. Some symptoms that may indicate a more serious condition include:
  • Eye tenderness or pain
  • Changes in vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty keeping the eye open.
Because every situation is a little different, call your healthcare provider if you have any questions on whether you need to be seen.
