- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Sore throat
- Upper respiratory tract infection, such as the common cold.
- Itchiness and tearing (with allergic conjunctivitis).
Many other conditions besides conjunctivitis can cause a red eye. If you think that you or your child has pink eye, contact your healthcare provider. This way, you can find out what is causing it and how it should be treated.
You also should contact your healthcare provider if you have eye pain, changes in your vision, sensitivity to light, a feeling like something is in your eye that prevents you from opening it, recent trauma to the eye, a severe headache with nausea, or if you wear contacts. When accompanied by a red eye, these symptoms may indicate a more serious condition.
