Pneumonia in Children

Can This Illness Be Prevented?

There are a couple of vaccines that can prevent certain types of pneumonia. The Hib vaccine has virtually eliminated Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) as a cause of pneumonia in children. The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Prevnar®, Prevnar 13™) has also significantly decreased the number of children getting pneumococcal pneumonia.

Whooping cough is a less common (but more severe) cause of pneumonia in infants under four months of age. The DTaP vaccine helps prevent this infection.

Combined, these vaccines have significantly decreased the number of children who get pneumonia each year.
