Scoliosis is a medical condition that causes an abnormal curvature of the spine. There are three main types of this musculoskeletal disorder: idiopathic scoliosis (in which there are no known causes), nonstructural scoliosis (the spine is structurally normal and the curve is temporary), and structural scoliosis (the spine has a fixed curve). Treatment for the disorder, which may involve bracing or surgery, is based on the person's age, the degree of the curve, and the type of scoliosis.
