Although exercise programs have not been proven to affect the natural progression of
scoliosis, exercise is strongly encouraged because it may help to minimize any potential decrease in functional ability over time. Exercising and participating in sports may also improve a person's general sense of well-being.
As an additional benefit, weight-bearing exercises, such as walking, running, soccer, and gymnastics, increase
bone density and help prevent
osteoporosis, which is a disorder that results in weak bones that can break easily. Although girls have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than boys do, the risk is reduced in women who exercise regularly all their lives.
