Scoliosis is a condition characterized by a side-to-side curvature of the spine. Although the causes are usually unknown, some cases of this musculoskeletal disorder are caused by a disease, injury, infection, or birth defect. Treatment for scoliosis (which may involve observation, bracing, or surgery) is based on the person's age, how much more the person is likely to grow, the type of scoliosis, and the degree and pattern of the curve.
