What to Do for a Teething Baby

Some babies may experience significant pain while they are teething. There are certain things that you can do for a teething baby, including natural remedies and medicinal remedies.

Natural Teething Remedies
Many healthcare providers recommend one of the following for safe and simple teething pain relief:

  • Gently rub the sore gums with a clean finger
  • Let your baby bite down on a clean, cool, and damp washcloth (you can even put it in the freezer for a few minutes)
  • Let your baby bite on an ice cube wrapped securely in a clean cloth
  • Give your baby a teething ring.

Medicinal Teething Remedies
To help relieve any discomfort or pain, you can give your infant an over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever such as acetaminophen (Infant Tylenol®) or ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®). Check with your baby's healthcare provider on the dose size that is appropriate for your baby (see Infant Tylenol Dosage for more information).

There are also gels, pastes, liquids, and swabs available over-the-counter that can help with teething pain. Although many parents report success with such products, some children find the numbing sensation to be even more disturbing than the actual pain.
