Ulesfia for Head Lice

Available by prescription only, Ulesfia® (benzyl alcohol lotion) is a medicine used to treat head lice. It comes in the form of a lotion and is applied to the hair and scalp.

As a treatment for head lice, Ulesfia works by paralyzing the breathing holes of the lice. The inactive ingredients in the lotion then clog up the breathing holes, causing the lice to suffocate. This process kills adult lice but does not affect the eggs. This is why you have to do two separate treatments seven days apart (to kill the lice that hatched the previous week).

Children as young as six months old can use Ulesfia. It is not approved in younger infants, as they have a higher risk for absorbing more of the medication through the skin. This medication should never be used in newborns, as it can cause a dangerous side effect known as "gasping syndrome."
