Ulesfia Uses

How Does Ulesfia Work?

The way Ulesfia works is unique. It does not work by affecting nerve signals, like most other lice treatments.

The active ingredient in Ulesfia (benzyl alcohol) paralyzes the breathing holes of the lice. The inactive ingredients in the lotion then clog up the breathing holes, causing the lice to suffocate. This process kills adult lice but does not affect the eggs, which is why two treatments are necessary.

Can Children Use It?

Ulesfia is approved for use in children as young as six months old. It is not approved for younger infants, as they have a higher risk for absorbing more of the medication through the skin. This medication should never be used in newborns, as it can cause a dangerous side effect known as "gasping syndrome."

Off-Label Uses for Ulesfia

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Ulesfia for something other than treating head lice. At this time, however, there are no universally accepted off-label uses for Ulesfia.
