Who Should Not Get the Varicella Vaccine?

You should not receive this vaccine if you:
 
  • Have had a serious reaction to any component of the varicella vaccine, including inactive ingredients such as gelatin or neomycin. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients.
  • Have blood or bone marrow cancer, such as leukemia.
  • Are taking immune-suppressing medications (see Drug Interactions With the Varicella Vaccine).
  • Have an immune-suppressing medical condition, such as HIV or AIDS.
  • Have a family history of immune-suppressing conditions (unless you know for sure that you do not also have the condition).
  • Have active untreated tuberculosis.
  • Are ill with a fever.
  • Are pregnant.
