Vusion (miconazole/zinc oxide/white petrolatum) is currently not available in a generic form. The medication is currently under the protection of patents that prevent any generic Vusion from being manufactured. Other drug companies will most likely begin producing generic Vusion products in February 2009, when the first patent expires, provided that lawsuits or patents for specific uses do not delay this.
Generic Vusion: An Overview
Vusion is made by Barrier Therapeutics, Inc. It is currently under the protection of patents that prevent any generic Vusion from being manufactured in the United States.
When Will Generic Vusion Be Available?
Barrier Therapeutics holds the rights to exclusively market Vusion ointment until at least February 2009. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version of the medication could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend the exclusivity period beyond 2009. This could include such things as other patents for specific
Vusion uses or lawsuits. Once the patent expires, several companies will likely begin manufacturing a generic Vusion drug.
How Is Vusion Different From Non-Prescription Products?
Vusion contains three different ingredients: miconazole, zinc oxide, and white petrolatum. Many over-the-counter diaper rash ointments contain zinc oxide and white petrolatum, but none contain miconazole (the antifungal ingredient). There are some non-prescription miconazole products (most for vaginal
yeast infections), but these are not approved to treat diaper rashes.
