Vusion ointment contains miconazole (an antifungal medication used to treat the
yeast infection). It also contains zinc oxide and white petrolatum, ingredients that work to protect the delicate and irritated skin. These two ingredients are found in many non-prescription diaper rash ointments and creams.
Vusion ointment should be used only to treat diaper rashes that are complicated by a documented
yeast infection. This means that your child's healthcare provider needs to do tests to make sure that your child really has a yeast infection. Keep in mind that a test that merely checks for the presence of
Candida albicans is not good enough, since this fungus is common on the skin and does not necessarily mean an infection. Instead, special tests are necessary to make sure that an infection and not just a colonization (the harmless presence of the yeast on the skin) is present.
Vusion ointment is not approved for use in adults. However, this does not mean that your healthcare provider cannot prescribe it for an adult. It just means that it has not been thoroughly studied in adults.
On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Vusion for treating something other than the condition discussed in this article. This is called an "
off-label" use. At this time, there are no universally accepted off-label Vusion uses.
