Zinc Oxide Drug Interactions

Zinc Oxide Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when zinc oxide is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Cisplatin
Theoretically, a high intake of zinc might help cancer cells to become resistant to cisplatin. If you are undergoing chemotherapy, check with your oncologist before taking supplemental zinc oxide.

Fluoroquinolones
Zinc oxide can bind to fluoroquinolone antibiotics in the digestive tract, preventing them from being absorbed into the bloodstream. Make sure to take fluoroquinolones at least two hours before, or four to six hours after, a dose of oral zinc oxide.

Penicillamine
Zinc oxide can bind to penicillamine antibiotics in the digestive tract, preventing them from being absorbed into the bloodstream. Make sure to separate penicillamine and oral zinc oxide products by at least two hours.

Tetracyclines
Zinc oxide can bind to tetracycline antibiotics in the digestive tract, preventing them from being absorbed into the bloodstream. Make sure to take tetracycline drugs at least two hours before, or four to six hours after, a dose of oral zinc oxide. There is some evidence that this interaction might not apply to doxycycline products.

Final Thoughts

Not all zinc oxide drug interactions were discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider about any specific drug interactions with zinc oxide that may apply to you.
